Our Story

Our Story

A collage featuring an old sepia-toned childhood photograph of a girl in a framed oval with leaves design and a contemporary color photo of a smiling woman in a yellow dress sitting on an orange chair with purple boots.

Helen’s Project was founded to remove the barriers that make mental-health care hard to access — especially for people navigating trauma, hardship, or systems not built with them in mind.

Inspired by the legacy of Helen “Cat” Smith, a community leader known for her strength, compassion, and service, our organization carries forward her belief that care should be immediate, dignified, and rooted in community.

Our founder’s own journey — surviving human trafficking, becoming a single parent, returning to college postpartum, and struggling to access mental-health services — revealed just how difficult it is to find help when you need it most. Helen’s Project was created to change that.

Today, with one call, individuals and families receive immediate access to affordable, culturally responsive therapy, medication support, care coordination, and youth and family programs across a growing network of states. We also support nonprofits, schools, and community organizations through our Community Care Partners Program.

Our mission is simple:
Make mental-health care accessible, compassionate, and stress-free — so people can focus on healing, not fighting the system.
